Early C17 house. Main range with kitchen wing to north-east and late C17 wing to
north-west. Timber frame on plinth, rough-cast rendered. Plain tiled, gabled roofs.
Main range has one side stack to west and one end stack to north. Local red brick
with moulded cornice on rubblestone bases. Two storeys and attics. Three casements
at first floor. Two similar windows on either side of entry to stairbay. Kitchen
wing also timber-framed and rendered. Tiled with projecting end stack. Two repaired
diagonally set shafts on rubblestone base. Casements. There is a fire insurance
plaque to east elevation. Interior. Main range of 3 bays and containing many original
details. Staircase of 4 flights. Closed string with oak treads. Plastered between
string and rail. South-west room, originally parlour, lined with early C17 sunken
square panels. Probably mid C16 moulded ceiling beams (reset). One first floor
room has Cl7 wall paintings, partly exposed. One of classical architecture framed
by border of geometrical ornament. Original fireplace of stone with chamfered and
stopped jambs, 4-centred arch and square head. There are 2 other similar fire-
places, one in room over hall and one in attic storey. The roof is of side purlin `
construction with long, straight bracing. Kitchen range of 2 bays and originally
open to roof. Large inglenook of stone. North-west wing of 3 bays. Side purlin roof.
Head of one post carved and may be a reused capital from a crown post roof. Original
back staircase.
