Bank, now commercial building, c. 1913. Sandstone ashlar, roof not visible.
Restrained Baroque style. 3 storeys, 5 bays. Banded rusticated ground
floor has entablature with modillion cornice. The 2 outer bays project
slightly and hold double doors, with patterned overlights, in enriched
architraves with paterae and angle lion masks. Ornate scrolled triple keys
run through bayleaf friezes and modillion cornices. Panels over : 'BANK'
and 'CHAMBERS'. Middle bays have long windows (modern glazing) in plain
reveals, with enriched plaques between bearing insignia. First-floor
windows have continuous projecting sills and alternate triangular and
segmental pediments above entablatures, middle one: an aedicule with Ionic
pilasters; blind balustrades below and plinths in outer bays where giant
rusticated quasi Ionic pilasters flank the windows and support top
entablature with modillion cornice, and short end-bay towers with raised
panels; balustraded parapet between the towers. Square 2nd-floor windows in
eared and shouldered architraves.
