Pair of lodges either side of driveway; c.1890, possibly by T. Lewis Banks
(London). Brick with sandstone ashlar dressings; hipped and gabled Welsh
slate roofs having pierced crestings to clay ridge tiles, terracotta urn
finials and ridge stacks. Single storey, with plinths and moulded eaves
cornices. Principal fronts face the driveway; each has 5-panelled door
under fanlight, set behind projecting ashlar 2-bay arcaded porch under
triangular pedimented gable; round arches spring from quasi-Ionic centre
pier and simple square angle piers. Balustrade to front and south return.
Circular window with glazing bars in tympanum of pediment. Early/mid C20
casement window in original opening to south of porch. South sides (facing
Grange Road) each have 5-light bow windows with ½-domed roof. North sides
each have canted bay with blank front and early/mid C20 casements in sides,
under projecting bowed veranda with turned timber baluster columns,
bracketed at eaves, and ½-domed roof. Attached to south pier of each porch
is a gatepier : panelled column with moulded pedestal and capital supporting
ornate wrought iron globe lantern. Mid C20 metal gates are not of interest.
Attached contemporary brick screen walls facing Grange Road. Late C20 rear
extensions are not of interest.
