Small country house, now two houses. 1628 with early C18 additions and
alterations and minor C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed limestone rubble
with ashlar quoins and dressings, collyweston slate partially hipped roof;
2 coped gables topped with ball finials; 3 ridge stacks and a single wall
stack. Latin cross plan. Two storey with attics partially over basement.
Main north west front has a central 2 bay gabled projection with 4 glazing
bar sashes and a central smaller sash in the gable above. The north side of
the projection has a C20 added porch and a single glazing bar sash to 1st
floor. Single bay to west has two 2-light mullion basement windows
and 2 glazing bar sashes. The 2 irregularly fenestrated bays to north have
2 more mullioned basement windows, two 3-light ovolo mullioned windows and a
similar single light window. The single bay gabled south west cross wing
has 2 glazing bar sashes and a single smaller sash above. The single bay north
east crossing has a single C20 glazing bar sash on the ground floor. All
sashes have plain stone surrounds with small keystones. The south west
front of the rear wing has an off centre glazed C20 door with a wooden lintel,
and to the south is the curved projection of a bake oven. There are
two 3-light ovolo mullion casements on the ground floor and 4 irregularly
placed ovolo mullions above, the central pair being 2 light the outer ones
3 light. The rear facade of the south west wing is blank. The north west
front of the rear wing is 3 bay with a central C19 door having stone surround
with slight 4 centre head, flanked by single 3 light ovolo mullion casements
with 3 similar casements above. The rear 2 bay facade of the south west wing
has a projecting C19 porch with a 2 light ovolo mullion casement to the left.
Above are 2 ovolo mullion casements one 2 light and other 3 light.
Interior; the window reveal over the door on the north east front is inscribed
in Lombardic script "1628' WI AHHBBYARD, WG OF HARBY,AK". The top flight of the
dog leg stair inserted in the screens passage is of mid C17 type with large
turned balusters. A ground floor room in the cross wing has a small C17
stone fireplace. The projecting wing of the north west front contains a
ground floor room with decorative plaster ceiling, richly moulded cornice
and plastered fielded panels to the walls. The mirror over the fireplace
has en eyed and shouldered surround with guilloche, bead and reel end egg
and dart mouldings. The first floor room over has a very fine plastered
ceiling with oak leaf and acorn relief designs, with mirror, cornice, and
plaster fielded panels as ground floor. It also has a contemporary C16
fireplace in marble.
