GV II*

Cinema and shops. 1921, altered mid C20, converted 1991. By
Adamson & Kinns. Steel frame, with concrete floors and brick
cladding. White faience facing and dressings, and slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: plinth, sill and lintel bands, relief friezes
between floors, scalloped main cornice, stepped coped parapet.
4 storeys plus attics; 9 window range. L-plan. Windows are
mainly original swing casements with glazing bar upper lights.
4 storeys plus attics; 9 window range divided into bays by
full height pilasters, each topped with a niche on an enriched
bracket, containing an allegorical figure.
Main front has a triple entrance bay with mid C20 door canopy,
and a pedimented dormer with round-arched window. On either
side, 3 bays, each with 3 tripartite windows on each floor.
Ground floor has segment-arched openings with mid and late C20
shopfronts. At each end, an angled corner bay with a
round-arched ground floor window and a pedimented dormer with
a segment-arched window.
Right return, to Queen Street, has 2 glazed bays similar to
the front, then 7 blind bays with segment-arched shopfronts,
1992.
Left return, to King Street, has 2 glazed bays similar to the
front. To left, a narrower entrance bay with a recessed glazed
door flanked by curved shop windows, and above a
segment-arched window. Above, 2 windows on each floor.
INTERIOR: has public rooms decorated in different historical
styles. Largely original auditorium, with a square proscenium
arch and a cartouche and supporters above. Side walls have 3
panels in the form of round-arched windows, with flanking
columns, portrait medallions, and swags. Elaborate frieze of
figures. Reticulated coved ceiling over the balcony, and a
simpler coved ceiling to the rear.
First floor foyer in Adam style, with panelled walls and
coffered ceiling with corner arabesques.
Second floor foyer in Jacobean Revival style, with framed
panelling and strapwork ceiling. Fireplace with the monogram
EPT (Elite Picture Theatre) in the overmantel.
Second floor restaurant in Classical Revival style with
panelled walls, double Ionic pilasters, and modillion cross
beams to enriched ceiling. Fireplace with overmantel mirror.
Second floor side room, fully panelled, with frieze painted
with nursery rhyme scenes.
