House. 1932 by George Checkley. White-painted render to
reinforced concrete structure. Flat bitumenised roof behind
parapet. Plan: International Modern style house of 2 storeys with
study on right (west) and kitchen and services on left (east)
with split-level one-and-a-half storey hall/living room at centre
with bedroom over rising above flat roof terraces. Later single
storey extension on right (west). Exterior: 2 storeys. 5 tall
symmetrically arranged windows on first floor and window bands
on ground floor with rendered porch to right of centre with
cantilevered canopy. South garden front 4 window bands on ground
floor, that to left of centre with French casement and thinner
window bands on first floor; the bay to left of centre with thin
window band under cantilevered balcony to window above in raised
bedroom. This bedroom and stair block has a flat roof canopy onto
the roof terrace. All metal-frame windows with casements.
Including terrace along south front with rendered parapet and
steps down to garden. Interior: Largely unaltered and retaining
most of original glazed steel frame doors. From the 2-storey
split-level hall/living room a masonry winder stairs with low
solid balustrade rises to axial passage along north front of
house with a glazed balcony overlooking the hall/living room.
Second flight of stairs from landing to roof terrace.
