CHARLECOTE

SP25NE CHARLECOTE PARK
1901-1/2/22 East entrance gates to Charlecote
18/03/97 Park and flanking railings and piers

GV II

Entrance gates and gate piers with flanking railings and
piers. 1861. By John Gibson. For Henry Spencer Lucy. Brick
with ashlar dressings and wrought-iron.
Paired round-headed gates have enriched wrought-iron work
including bands pierced with luces and cross-crosslets from
the Lucy Arms; flanking wrought-iron panels with finials are
attached to brick piers, each with ashlar plinth with roll
moulding, large quoins and entablature; the Lucy crest of
winged boar's head capping pier to left and griffin's head
capping pier to right were restored and reinstated in 1993;
both emerge from coronets on moulded bases with egg-and-dart.
Low flanking ashlar walls curve forward and have roll-moulded
coping and railings with enriched heads, the taller rails with
brackets and larger finials. Brick end piers, each with ashlar
plinth, angle pilasters with fluting and enriched capitals,
and cornice; semi-reclining wild boar. Property of the
National Trust.
