GV II*

Gatehouse. Early C16. Timber-framed with plastered infill. Plain tiled roof
with octagonal lantern. Two storeys with first floor jetties on two sides.
Two bays with cartway and pedestrian entrance in bay to south-west.
Substantial timber-frame, close studded with curved tension braces in each
bay. Bullnosed jetty joists and solid curved braces to posts. Curved
chamfered braces to doorway and cartway forming a 'Caernavon' arched head.
Two pairs of three-light mullioned first floor windows. Interior details
largely intact with screen partitions between openings. Crown-post roof;
crown-post over central truss, braced two ways to collars, and collar purlins.
The gatehouse is situated within the moated site of Down Hall.
