4/322 Former cottages (now shippon and
- store) at approximately 70 metres
north east of Penrose Farmhouse
GV II
Terrace of former cottages, now used as a shippon and a store. C17 remodelled in the
C18 and C20. Granite rubble walls with granite dressings. Grouted scantle slate
roofs except where replaced with corrugated asbestos at the left-hand end. Gable
ends.
Plan: Long rectangular cranked-on-plan range. Originally probably 3 or 4 small
houses or a lodging house for servants to the main house. Partly built into the bank
at the rear. Only surviving fireplace is at the right-hand end and this was
remodelled in the C18 to accommodate an oven.
Exterior: Long mostly 2-storey range. East front has 7 C17 small chamfered window
openings (one opening blocked) set under the eaves. There are 4 larger C17 window
openings to the ground floor and 2 original C17 doorways. Other openings are C18 or
later but there is some reused C17 dressed masonry. Adjoining on the left is a
single storey (with same eaves level) front with 2 C17 window openings and later
leant-to at far left. Rear has 2 complete C17 window openings (far right and left),
some C18 openings and some C19 doorways.
Interior: Right-hand end is little altered since last occupied (circa 1900) and has
its original chamfered fireplace lintel spanning C18 jambs with a complete oven
behind the left-hand jamb. Floors and roof structure are C19.
This is a rare C17 building type in Cornwall and retains many of its original
features.
