1840. This part of the North Midland Railway surveyed by George Stephenson.
Some evidence of Francis Thompson's involvement in design of cutting walls
and bridges. Fine embankment walls of rusticated stone, concave cross section
with band carried round from bridges and internal buttresses. The railway
was constructed in a mile long cutting through the town centre in order to
provide minimum disturbance to the established street pattern.
