North Midland Railway opened Derby to Belper in 1840. Route surveyed by George
Stephenson. Tall coursed stone tower. Four storeys. One opening on each
floor. Roofless. Square plan. Sited over the Milford Tunnel. Nixon suggests
may have been used as a siting tower or theodolite during the surveying of
the line and points out that its construction would have employed a large
number of men during a slack period. Nixon pages 158 and 159.
