Apprentice house, now terrace. 1817. Rubble limestone, part rendered. Welsh slate
roof. One stone ridge stack. Two storeys. Castellated folly at the west end,
probably built as an eye-catcher to be seen from the C18 Cressbrook Hall. West
elevation has a square castellated tower to the left with four tiers of lancet
windows. To the right, a pointed arched doorway with two lancets above with wooden
Y-tracery. Castellated parapet above. Upper part set back, with two more tiers of
lancets and a stepped gable. Square tower to the right with three tiers of lancets
and a mono-pitched roof, perhaps truncated. North elevation of six bays, four upper
windows retain their glazing bar sashes. The terrace was built as the apprentices'
house and had one large room on each floor to accommodate male and female apprentices
from Cressbrook Mill.
