Description

WHIMPLE
SY 09 NW
5/205 Perkey Pool Cottage
-
- II

Cottage. C16 or C17, altered in the late C19 - early C20. Plastered cob on stone
rubble footings, north-east wall built of late C19 - early C20 brick; thatch roof.
Plan: 2-room plan cottage facing south-east. Through-passage between the rooms.
The larger right room has an axial stack backing onto the passage. Since no
internal inspection was available at the time of this survey it is not possible to
determine the development of the house in detail. Nevertheless the right (north-
east) end wall has been rebuilt in brick and therefore it seems likely that the
house once extended a further this end. Maybe it was a 3-room-and-through-passage
plan house, originally with an open hall. Cottage is 2 storeys.
Exterior: irregular 2-window front of probably C20 casements with diamond pane
leaded glass effect. The passage front doorway is left of centre. It is quite
large and contains a C20 plank door with a contemporary thatch-roofed porch.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but is said
to contain C16 or C17 carpentry including a jointed cruck truss roof structure.
