Description

WHIMPLE BROADWAY, Whimple
SY 0497-0597
10/238 Sandfords
-
GV II

House. Mid C19. Plastered stone rubble, maybe with brick; probably brick stacks
with plastered chimneyshafts; slate roof.
Plan: L-plan house. The main block faces south-south-east, say south. It has a 2-
room plan with central entrance hall containing the main stair. These are the
principal rooms; the left one with an end stack, the right one with a rear lateral
stack backing onto the kitchen wing. This projects at right angles to rear with end
stack. 2 storeys.
Exterior: symmetrical 3-window front of original casements with an attractive
margin-pane pattern of glazing bars arranged around a central doorway which contains
part-glazed panelled door behind original timber flat-roofed porch; moulded
entablature and square-section panelled posts, front has double doors, glazed with a
diamond pattern of glazing bars and similar overlight.
Interior: was not available for inspection at the time of this survey but appears
to be well-preserved and include a great deal of original joinery detail.
These attractive margin-pane casements are apparently the product of a local
workshop.
