14/73 Cobb Cottage
GV II
House. Mid Cl7 with circa early C18 addition. Rendered cob walls. Gable ended
thatch roof. Brick axial stack to wing, projecting rear lateral stack of rendered
rubble with brick shaft.
Plan: originally 2-room plan with small unheated dairy at centre which has entrance
lobby in front of it. The left-hand room is also unheated; the larger right-hand
room is heated by a rear lateral fireplace with an adjoining straight-run staircase
in rectangular projection. Wing added at front of left-hand room in C18 with
kitchen and unheated room beyond it which may have been of non-domestic use and has
no room above.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2-window front of mid-late C20 large 2-light
diamond leaded pane casements. C20 part-glazed door to their left. The wing
projects beyond it with a small outbuilding projecting from its inner face. At rear
is integral rectangular projection for lateral stack and stairs.
Interior: right-hand room has chamfered cross beam and fireplace with chamfered and
ogee-stopped wooden lintel which has had modern grate inserted. C18 built-in curved
shelves with fielded panel doors to cupboard below. Forming a passage on the 1st
floor is an original chamfered plank-and-muntin screen which extends at right angles
to form the partition to the end bedroom. Visible on the 1st floor are the feet of
substantial straight principal rafters with threaded or trenched purlins - these are
probably also Cl7 but lack of access to roof space prevents a fuller inspection.
Despite the insertion of modern windows this house retains a considerable amount of
interest in its well-preserved plan form and the unusual existence of plank-and
muntin screens on the 1st floor.
