House. Mid C17 with later additions and alterations. Roughcast cob on stone footings; gable
end thatched roof. Although the house is now a 3-cell structure running parallel to the street
with a rear wing, it was originally a symmetrical 2-room plan house with a narrow central
through-passage and with what were probably farmbuildings attached at right angles to the
left-hand end, set end-on to the street; the hipped roof of this latter range is still visible
internally; at some point, probably in the C18 the farmbuilding range was converted into
living accommodation, comprising a room (with chamber above) and rear wing, both heated
by a rear stack. The wall between the original range and this added room is of cob. External
rear lateral stacks heat each of the other rooms. One now dismantled. Stacks of cob, with
brick shafts. 2 storeys.
Exterior Front: Regular 5 window range; the 3 to the right (two 3-light casement windows
flanking a 2-light window above the porch), in tall embrasures, together with those to each
side of the porch, that to the right with saddle bars and old latches, indicate the dimensions
of the original symmetrical house. All 4 ground floor windows with leaded panes. Porch,
C19, open timber work and wavy bargeboarding. C20 casement windows. The rear wing
(Folly Cottage) emended further, probably in the C19, its roof ridge lower than the main
house with C19 fenestration, heated by an end stack.
Interior: middle and right-hand end rooms with reduced fireplaces and pretty Victorian
chimney pieces; left hand room with exposed fireplace, largely rebuilt to the front, but with
roughly chamfered lintel to the fireplace serving the wing. Ceiling beams boxed. Largely
mid to late C19 joinery, although the turned newels of the main stairs could be earlier,
possibly even C18. Roof: C17, morticed and pegged straight principals, the trusses to the
wing look rather later, although the early hip-structure survives.
Folly Cottage noted as having exposed ceiling and wall timbers, and open fireplace with
wood bressummer.
