Farmhouse. C17 with extensive early C18 remodelling; service wing C19. Squared
granite facade, rubble elsewhere, rendered service wing,slate roofs. A
symmetrical front with through passage to offset stair projection with wing to
right and return block parallel with front forming small courtyard to west,
enclosed by wall. Two storeys, 5 windows; 9-pane over 12-pane sashes to
voussoirs, with keystone below plain granite string course at ground floor.
Central C19 glazed doors under transome light in later glazed gabled porch.
Wood frieze and moulded cornice to hipped roof with swept profile. Return,
left, is plain. Back wing has various casements, side wing has sashes. stack
to left and eaves stack , back right; large stack near centre on early service
wing. Panelled door on return in small courtyard which also encloses stair
extension with swept down roof. Interior: through hall, various 6-panel and
2-panel fielded doors. Complete fielded panelling and shutters to main parlour,
right to entry, C19 plastered ceiling with circular panels to centre and
corners. large C17 or earlier granite fireplace on back wall, with roll mould
carried to ogee top and with triangular spandrel decoration. Good C18 dog-leg
stair with swept rail on Doric newels and 3 turned balusters to each tread, all
painted. In back wing two large open fireplaces back o back, considerably
modified. Various good panelled doors. the granite fireplace probably obtained
from the demolition of Champernowne House.
