- II
Former infantry barracks, with gatehouses. 1794. Rubble stone walls varying
from 2 m to 3 m in height and enclosing a long rectangular opening narrowing to
a rounded point at the north end. Wall fairly continuous, at south end to
Barrack Road has pair of lodges in one storey with hipped slate roofs, 2 blank
segmental-headed recesses to cills to each, and flanky square piers to pair of
wood gates. South wall is mainly lower than remainder and has large opening,
about 8 metres wide, at centre. The south west corner contains an L-plan one
storey house with hipped slate roofs, modified in the C20, but important to hold
the corner of the enclosure. On the west side are four large external square
buttresses with a further 2 near the south end of the walling. These Napoleonic
barracks, or more probably an enclosed camping ground, now (1987) filled with
new housing, but the containing wall is reasonably complete, and is an important
historical reminders to the town.
