1899. Peddie and Washington Browne 3-storey, plain Baronial
house. Snecked red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings.
Moulded string course encircling above ground floor,
eaves course. Raised margins.
S ELEVATION: 3 bays at centre with stone bracketted,
balustraded balcony across 1st floor entered by doorway
at centre with strapwork panel above; crowstepped gable
above with dated shield panel in gable head. Flanking
bay to right with 3 windows at ground and bipartites above,
single windows to flanking bays to left, door in
outer left bay in pilastered, moulded surround, Dutch
bonnet panel above, wrought-iron studs and hinges to
oak door, 2nd floor windows with pedimented dormer
heads. Outer right bay advanced and gabled with bipartites
at ground and 2nd floor. Conical roofed stair tower in
re-entrant angle with panelled door below corbel courses.
N ELEVATION: near symmetrical U-plan with corbelled
conical roofed stair turrets in re-entrant angle. Balcony
at 1st floor in left turret. Gable ends similarly windowed
(except ground) with carved panels over 2nd,
crowstepped. Irregular side elevations.
Small-pane upper sashes to sash and case windows with
some fully small-pane. Beak skewputts to crowstepped
gables, consoled skewputts to coped gable skews.
Moulded coping to stacks slated roof.
INTERIOR: some original details. Tiles vestibule, panelling
and plasterwork.

Commissioned J E Laidlay. Alterations, 1906, Peddie and
Washington Browne, and later by Richardson and McKay.
Plain Baronial version of Bryce revival style. Panel
above doorway may have taken its form from that at Woolmet
House, Midlothian (now dem). Facet-headed sundial on
rough pedestal set by the coach house, may be of early
18th century. Other sculptured stones nearby.
