Joseph Leycester Lyne was an Anglican deacon who aimed to reintroduce monasticism to the Anglican Church. He, with others of a like mind, built the monastery in the 1860's. He adopted the title of Father Ignatius and the monastery was run on his own interpretation of Benedictine principles. In 1880 a vision of the Virgin mary was seen and a statue of "Our Lady of Llanthony" stands near the monastery.
A later occupant (1924-1928) of the building was Eric Gill (artist/sculptor/engraver)who created Prospero and Ariel sculpture at Broadcasting House. The East window of the nearby St.Mary's Chapel, Capel-y-Ffinn is also his work. He also created the well known Gill Sans typeface.
