Superstructure of former public well; now ex situ. The well to
which it belonged was on the east side of the River Brun,
opposite Dawson Square; the structure there was renewed in
1736, and this portion was removed to this site probably
c1881. Sandstone rubble, with a roughly-hewn monolithic
rectangular basin (the front now damaged) set in a short low
rubble bank (approx 2m long and 0.5m high); with a simple
recess and plain lintel.
HISTORY: commemorates what was formerly the only source of
pure water in St Peter's hamlet.
Forms group with Cross of St Paulinus (qv) and with base of
former market cross (qv).
