Description

GREAT BOOKHAM CHURCH ROAD

Old Barn Hall

GV II

Barn to Sole Farm, now village hall. Probably C17 or earlier (exterior all C20);
slightly re-located, and altered, with extensions, in C20. Timber frame now cased
in modern brick, red tile roof. The exterior of the structure, which has been
surrounded by modern flat-roofed aisles and has a hipped roof with inserted
dormer windows, is not of special interest. The interior is a 6-frame post-and-
truss structure with large jowelled posts, arch-braces to the tie-beams, scarf-
jointed wallplates (strengthened with iron straps), windbraced queen-strut roof
hipped at both ends (and now ceiled at collar level), and rafters of large
scantling; the frames have carpenter's marks in series from east to west, and
the posts have blocked mortices of former mid-rails.
