The Old Fire Station

GV II

Fire station, now public conveniences. 1885. Timber framed on red and
brown brick plinth clad in painted weatherboard, plain tiled roof with
wooden, lead-covered , pyramidal bell cote under iron finial, placed
diagonally across the ridge. to the gable end facing the street. Single-
storeyed with bargeboards to gable ends pierced by roundels on the front.
Tall, full height doors across the width of the front with octagonal
stone plaque above dated: "S and Am V.F.B.1885". Lantern on scroll bracket
support to gable apex. Two three-light casements with diamond pattern
tracery to each side under louvred tops. Two doors to right hand return
wall. Pentice roofed extension to rear. The building is an interesting
example of a later C19 purpose-built fire station and is a prominent
feature in the village centre.
