4/10 CHURCH OF ST PETER

Parish Church. C14, much restored in the mid C19. Square west tower in
coralline crag, nave and chancel stucco on flint and rubble. Plain tiled roofs
with parapet to east wall of nave. The fenestration is cusped 'Y' tracery of
Decorated style with the exception of one window on the north wall of the nave
which has a depressed arch in Perpendicular style. The south porch is late
C19. The south doorway is C14 with moulded arch and jambs. There are diagonal
stepped buttresses to the west end of the nave at the junction with the tower,
stepped buttress also to the north and south of the nave and chancel; the
buttresses to the north are reinforced with red brick. The interior has
plaster ceilings with no roof structure visible. The chancel arch has two
quatrefoil openings. C14 piscina in south wall of nave to east end and piscina
in south wall of sanctuary. The font is C13 with octagonal bowl in Purbeck
marble.
