Ice House in grounds of Geoffrey Harris House

Ice-house to Coombe House (qv, now Geoffrey Harris House). C18. Red brick, in Flemish bond to passage gable, English bond to passage side-walls; mostly covered in earth. Domed, circular, storage chamber, of horse-shoe cross-section, more than half sunk into the ground and the rest earth-covered. Entrance-passage, on east side, has round-arched entrance with late C20 plank door below gable. Inside, passage has stone floor and brick vault and leads to entrance to chamber and, at end on north side, to a flight of brick stairs which curve around the side of the chamber and lead down to a second, north, door. Inside the chamber, four perforated clay-tile drains. Source: Domestic Buildings Research Group (Surrey) Report No 2224 (1979).
