NY 75 NE ALLENDALE

8/5 Hindley Wrae Farmhouse

House, dated 166(2?) on lintel, remodelled early Cl9. Rubble with quoins,
partly rendered; slate roof with ashlar stacks. Square plan with 4 rooms
all served by a massive central stack, modified in Cl9 by the construction
of a smoke duct at 1st floor level feeding a new flue in the south wall.
Gabled south front 2 storeys, 2 windows. Central 6-panelled door with
overlight, 12-pane sash windows; tooled and margined door surround, lintels
and sills, stepped stack with dripstone on gable. Right return has 2-light
mullioned windows, one altered,and a single-light window. Left return has
2 single-light windows and a 3-light mullioned window above. Rear elevation
has off-centre doorway with Tudor arch in square frame with date and initials
'E.S.' on lintel; centrally-placed single-light window above. Interior;
one C17 fireplace with chamfered cambered lintel, 2 late C18 fireplaces.
Unusual Cl9 roof trusses with scissor bracing.
