gates to south of

Garden walls and gates, c.1930 re-using imported C17/18 material. Rubble
with dressings; wrought-iron gates. Flat-coped walls, lower on south; piers
at southern angles have low pyramidal caps. Main gate in centre of south wall
has tall cruciform piers of tooled stone with stepped bases and moulded caps
with dentil cornice, holding screen with segmental-headed gate, both with
arrowhead dogbars and middle rail with scroll ornament. Scrolly overthrow
(damaged). Smaller C18 gate at north-west corner has C19 overthrow with
lantern. At north-east corner blocked C17 doorway with keyed lintel and
moulded cornice. Three triangular-headed recesses in west wall with C19
carved slab showing civic dignitary and allegorical figures, above.
