School and schoolhouse. Dated 1856, for Henry L. Gaskell. Minor late C20
alterations and additions to rear. Squared and coursed limestone with tooled
ashlar dressings. Slate roof, half-hipped to right. Irregular plan. In a Tudor
Gothic style. One storey school to right with schoolhouse to left of one storey
and attic and 2 storeys. Chamfered plinth, and moulded wooden barge boards
throughout with shaped ends and pendant finials. Schoolhouse: 2 bays. Buttresses
to right with chamfered offsets. Two gabled semi dormers with chamfered-coped
parapets and chamfered octagonal panels on carved scrolls, inscribed HLG
(left-hand) and 1856 (right-hand); 3-light chamfered mullioned and transomed
stone windows with small-paned casements (right-hand window cut-down in C20 and
French casements inserted). Right-hand return front: porch with hipped stone
roof, diagonal buttresses with chamfered tops and central chamfered Tudor-arched
doorway with half-glazed 2-panelled door. Chamfered rectangular window in
left-hand return. External bellcote above with chamfered offsets
chamfered-arched bell opening with bell, and gabled top with coping and tall
wooden finial. Rear: pair of gabled semi-dormers with 3-light chamfered
mullioned and transomed stone windows, and central truncated external lateral
stone stack with chamfered offsets. Schoolhouse: one storey and attic to left
with projecting 2-storey wing to right. External lateral stone stack to right
with chamfered offsets and 2 octagonal stone shafts with moulded caps and bases.
1:1 windows; 2- and 3-light chamfered mullioned stone windows with small-paned
wooden casements. Gabled semi dormer to left and ground-floor ashlar canted
hipped bay to right of 1:2:1 lights. Carved shield in chamfered recessed
rectangular panel in apex of right-hand gable, depicting a hand holding an
anchor and with the inscription: "SPES". Chamfered rectangular windows in
returns of wing. Entrance in right-hand return front consisting of C19 neo-Tudor
boarded door in chamfered Tudor arch with stops. Gabled porch consisting of
hollow-chamfered Tudor archway with panelled spandrels and ovolo-moulded outer
square surround. Gabled wing to rear. Interiors not inspected.
