Lychgate and Steps South
West of Rowsley Church

Lychgate. Mid C19. Coursed squared sandstone and ashlar,
timber superstructure with hipped tiled roof with gableted top.
Built into the hillside. Broad flight of seven stone steps,
flanked by curving coursed stone walls with chamfered copings
and ashlar end piers. Lychgate has two substantial parallel
ashlar walls with vermiculated finish and chamfered coping,
either side of a further flight of five steps. Rectangular
timber superstructure with diagonal curved and cross bracing.
Stop chamfered mouldings. Pair of wooden gates with straight
braces and trefoils.
