No.2, The Engine House

II

Engine house, now house. Circa 1790 with later additions and alterations.
Uncoursed limestone rubble with reddish-brown brick patching, plain tile
roof. Square-plan. 3 levels; late C20 casements to first and third
levels, former with mid-C19 segmental head and latter in round-arched
recess. Interior: no machinery survives but in its working days it
housed a Newcomen engine, said to be one of only 2 in the county. Coal
mining ceased here in 1820s and the building was then converted to domestic
use, the former boiler house to west becoming a blacksmith's shop; this
and another outbuilding to east were demolished in 1979 when renovation
took place and single-storey additions (not included) were made to either
side.
