Terrace of houses forming south side of square. c.1815-20, Portman Estate
development. Nos. 35 to 38 rebuilt in facsimile. Brown stock brick with
channelled stucco ground floor; Nos. 39 and 40 fully stuccoed; slate roofs,
most concealed. 4 storeys and basements, some with dormered mansards.
3-window wide fronts. Semicircular arched doorways to left; with inset
Greek Doric columns and Greek fret doorheads framing panelled doors,
fanlights. Recessed sashes, most retaining glazing bars, under flat gauged
arches to upper floors. Plat band finishing off ground floor stuccowork.
Crowning stucco cornices and blocking courses. Original 1st floor cast
iron geometric and anthemion patterned balconies. Cast iron area railings
with urn finials.
