Small mansion, 1815 for Thomas Hargreaves, extended c.1848. Ashlar,
hipped slate roof. Double pile plan with service wings to rear, and
3-bay addition on left. Two storeys, in classical style; symmetrical
5-bay facade, the 3 centre bays breaking forward slightly and
pedimented; dentilled cornice; open Doric porch, wide doorway with
margin lights, fluted columns and frieze, segmental fanlight with
radiating glazing bars; all windows sashed with glazing bars at
1st floor but now concealed at ground floor. Right return wall of 4
bays (continued as 2-bay service wing) has in 2nd bay a pillared porch
with entablature, and above this a tall stairlight. Late C19 ornamental
iron verandah at rear of service wings. Stepped back to the left the
addition is of 2 higher storeys, has tall windows at ground floor
(concealed) smaller sashed windows above; a dentilled cornice and a
parapet concealing the roof. History: Hargreaves family of Broad Oak
Printworks (estd. 1792) were principal manufacturers of Accrington.
