- cottages

- II

Farmhouse and 4 attached cottages (now 3) all under one roof, mostly late C18
but incorporating some earlier fabric. Watershot coursed sandstone on plinth
(white cement washed), stone slate roof with gable chimneys and 4 ridge
chimneys. Long range of 6 bays, single depth with 2 front porches and 2 rear
outshuts. All 2 storeys; single-storey gabled porches at junction of 1st and
2nd, and 4th and 5th bays; windows mostly altered, but there are coupled
windows on each floor of Ist bay, and 3 stepped triple-light windows at Ist
floor to the right. Rear wall has 2 full-height outshuts, masonry in centre
slightly projecting and of rubble, various inserted windows. Interior: in 3rd
bay 2 large chamfered beams and a roof truss with very large chamfered
tie-beam. History: documented occupation of "Turn Hillynges" or "Turn Hill"
from late C16; some surviving fabric here probably from C17.
