Church of Saint Catherine

Church. C15 west tower and spire, nave and chancel rebuilt 1851 by
J B Atkinson in Perpendicular style. Coursed rubble with freestone
dressings to west tower and spire, ashlar to nave and chancel, graduated
slate roof. 2-stage west tower with spire, 5-bay nave with projection to
south door, 2-bay chancel. West tower: plinth. Slit window to first stage,
2-light pointed belfry opening with Perpendicular tracery under crenellated
parapet with crocketed corner finials. Recessed spire with cross finial.
Nave: plinth, buttresses with offsets. Four 2-light square-headed windows
with Perpendicular tracery. Boarded 2-leaf door in pointed arch of two orders
with nook-shafts on hood-mould with monarch stops. Stone pentice roof.
Chancel: plinth, buttresses with offsets and gablets. 2-light pointed
windows with curvilinear tracery under hood-moulds with monarch stops.
5-light pointed east window with geometrical tracery under hood-mould with
face stops. Coped gable. Flory cross finial. INTERIOR: double-chamfered
pointed tower arch dying into responds. Open principal rafter roof: hammer-
beam trusses alternating with arch-braced collared trusses. C14 octagonal
font on octagonal base with pyramidal stops.
