Flight of Steps with Urns
and Statues, East of
Orangery
GV II
Flight of steps with urns and statues. Early C19, part of the
Sixth Duke of Devonshire's remodelling of the gardens.
Sandstone ashlar and Carrara marble. Straight flight of stone
steps flanked by stepped parapet walls. The foot of the steps
is flanked by two statues of sitting dogs, based on the C2 Dog
of Alcibiades. At the top of the steps are two urns of Carrara
marble, with relief carving. As a centre piece looking down the
steps is a larger and more sumptuous urn on a carved pedestal,
both in Carrara marble. The Gardens and Park are included on
the Gardens Register at Grade I.
