Martineau Cottages. Circa 1900. Each pair a symmetrical design of 2 storeys
and attic, 2 windows. Steep red tile roof, ½-hipped at ends and with low eaves
at rear; gables spring from eaves level above windows, with pierced decorative
barge-boards and ½ timber above window-heads, with red herringbone brick infill.
Massive central stack, the upper part divided by thin pilasters, splayed at the
top beneath projecting bands. Walls of red brickwork (Flemish bond) with 1st
floor moulded brickwork weathering band, rubbed flat arches, tile cills, and
a high plinth. Thin wood casements. Sides have an attic window central below
the gable, 2 windows on either side of the axial porch and a small window beneath
the outshot. The porch has a large tiled and gabled roof, on an open timber
frame resting on brick walls. At the rear is a detached utility building, in
similar style. At Westbury the porch has been replaced with a flat roofed
single storeyed extension, in red brick and of matching style.
