Formerly 3 cottages. C16 with later alterations. Cob, and coursed sandstone
rubble. 2 storeys and 2 axial brick stacks. The western cottages with hipped
thatched (water reed) roof, the remainder under slate. 3-window range to 2 western
cottages, upper windows under eyebrow eaves; 2 doors and two 2-light casement
windows below (all casements about to be replaced at time of survey 1984). East end
of range with one window to each storey and a single doorway. Rear (ie. facing
north range q.v) with 2 windows only to slated unit, but windows to be inserted in
west pair. Timber casements, where they survive, of late C18 or early C19.
Interior: west cottages (now one dwelling) with jointed cruck (south blade
considerably renewed) and ridge piece. One chamfered beam, stopped.
The 6 cottages at Southernlake form a group consisting of 2 ranges which face each
other across a central space.
