The Old Hop Kiln

(Formerly listed as Outbuilding and hop-kiln approximately 10 metres north-west of Little Cherkenhill, SMITH END GREEN)

GV
II

Former outbuilding and hop-kiln, formerly probably service range. Probably late medieval origins, with mid C17 cross-wing, late C17 alterations and additions and C19 hop-kiln. Timber-framing with red brick infill and red brick. Plain tile roof. L-plan with cross-wing to right and hop-kiln to rear of it. Single storey with attic and two storeys. Lower range to left has double doors to left and two-light casement and two doors to right. Square panel timber-framing to left, on left end, and in part to rear. Attic window frame in gable end and partly decayed roof.

Interior has a full cruck truss to right. The cross-wing has square-panel timber-framing to front with small projecting lean-to and two small, two-light windows. Lattice framing to gable. Right end is of brick with dentilled eaves. Rear gable, now internal has similar lattice framing. Roof has central truncated upper cruck truss, the blades cut down and re-used. Double hop-kiln to rear with slightly higher roof line, weather-boarded ridge louvre and small windows to ground floor and attic rear. There appears to be a distinct relationship between this outbuilding and Little Cherkenhill (qv), since the cross-passage position is in alignment with the probable screens-passage position of the latter, thus suggesting this was originally a service range to the house.
