10/103 Gates and piers to Dean Hall

II

Gates and piers: 1852 for N P (datestone); thin coursed, squared
red sandstone, grey ashlar quoins: wrought-iron. Piers flanking
carriageway, pedestrian gate on left, curved wing walls. Piers
square with chamfered arises, plain, red plinth, moulded edge to
cap with crenellated upper edge and pyramid top: pedestrian gate
cambered head with chamfered edge and projecting keystone. Plain
weathered coping to wing walls. Main gates hung on large iron
posts with spear finial: sweeping top rail, matched by upward-
curving brace in bottom half: dog and main bars have smaller,
spear finials. Single pedestrian gate a compressed version of
centre two.
