6/87 Stables about 30 yards
north-west of Whitfield

GV II

Stables. Probably late C18, partly remodelled in early C19. Brick, finely
coursed sandstone, sandstone dressings, and Welsh slate roof. Rectangular
plan aligned roughly north/south. Two storeys. East elevation has six
windows, 9-pane sashes under wedge lintels, three to each side of large
semi-circular headed full-height triumphal arch with large projecting
keystone in advanced pedimented centre, ground floor has horizontally
hinged iron casements and lunettes each beneath reduced versions of large
central arch, bold plain string separates the two storeys, moulded deep
stone cornice; lean-to wings to left and right each have one large 2-leafed
door under a semi-circular head. West elevation has lower extension to
north, 3-centred central archway, lunette in pediment above and clock facing
west on second pediment to its rear, weathervane in form of a fox on ridge
between opposing pediments. Interior noted as having clock mechanism, bell
and stalls with iron fittings. Attached to south side of central west
entrance arch is a mounting block.
