Description

PISHIOBURY DRIVE
1.
5253
(West End)
Gate Piers
next to No 1
TL 473 137:6/23
II GV
2.
C18. 2 tall square stone piers flanking the entrance to the drive. Low
moulded base. 7 courses of V-jointed vermiculated rusticated masonry.
Smooth dressed frieze below projecting moulded cornice. On top a late
C19 large stone ball finial with moulded circular foot set on octagonal
block raised from a square bed by concave swept broaches. The facing
sides of the piers each have an engaged dressed stone gate post with
necking and scrolled top dying into 2nd rusticated course from top.
Reconstruction of S pier after an accident in 1974 showed that the pier
had a solid brick core, cased in stone. C19 photograph shows the piers
each surmounted by a griffin's head facing inward. These were presumably
replaced by the present ball finials when the estate changed hands.
