13/110 Fire Station
Fire Station. Conversion and rebuild 1905 of early C18 house. Stock
brick, rendered to main elevations, with slate roof. Double range with
tower. Three storeys with rusticated ground floor, cill band, plat
band to 2nd floor and modillion cornice parapet with stacks to left and to
right. Three sashes on 2nd floor, 2 tripartite and central single sash
on 1st floor, with only the upper leaves with glazing bars, and with
incised keyed lintels over. Two large glazed metal carriage doors on
ground floor with heavy cornices on double brackets. Central oval bronze
dedication plaque in keyed surround, recording date of opening (17th
October 1905) the Town Dignitaries of the time, and providing a fire bell
(no longer there). Incised on the upper plat band: Ramsgate Fire Station.
The house, called Effingham House was originally the house of Admiral
William Fox (d.1810), with extensive grounds to rear (site of Clarendon
House school and Ramsgate Library). Effingham street was throughout
the C18 the most desirable residential street in Ramsgate, graced by
nobility and notability, many of the finer houses still surviving.
