Milestone. Circa 1742 for Wadesmill Turnpike Trust, inscription
covered by iron tellered plate c1804 possibly to design of
McAdam. White freestone with cast iron front plate. A low
square pillar of stone about 400mm square now sunk to about half
its height in the raised pavement, but 500mm protruding with
lower part of large front plate obscured. This has a segmental
curved top and raised edge bead. Inscription reads
'LONDON/27/WARE/6/(BUNTINGFORD/4)'. The first word is raised in
a segmental arc. (Branch Johnson (1970) 109-10, 187).
