House. C15 NW wing, late C16 hall range and SW wing, C17 internal
chimney, renovated in C19. Timber frame exposed, low stucco sill,
plastered brick infill, painted brick ground floor and infill to 1st
floor on front. Steep old red tile roofs. A 2-storeys T-plan house
facing N onto street with projecting C15 storeyed gabled 2-bays
crosswing on right with collar-purlin roof and original cusped oak
bargeboards. Knee brace and jetty-post and beam-end on W flank show it
was formerly jettied to street but adapted to straight projecting front
by inserting of corner posts probably in alteration of late C16 when
former hall replaced by a 2-storeys one-bay hall-range with tension
bracing and closer-spaced thinner studs. At same time 2-storeys, 2-bays
wing added extending crosswing to rear and providing cellar below new
part. S front has 2 sash windows of 3/3 panes to 1st floor and 3-lights
casement window to ground floor on LH. Casement windows and glazed
entrance door in W side, with flat topped dormer to SW wing with
external S gable chimney enclosed in single-storey painted-brick and
tile N extension. Interior has exposed frame and floor structures with
cross-beam in NW wing, blocked 2-light window to ground floor N, and
large open fireplaces to massive stack at junction of hall range with NW
crosswing. Salt cupboard with diamond pattern on oak door, and recess
with shouldered head in back of W fireplace (to former parlour). Axial
beam with bar-stops to chamfer in hall range. Quirked stop to axial beam
in SW wing, which has also had its cut tie-beam strengthened by being
jointed to oak doorposts linked by dovetailed cross member at head.
Collar-purlin and long curved braces from both gables remain in NW
crosswing but tie-beam and crown-post of central truss removed for
headroom. Long curved braces in sides and wide panels in wall 3 to each
beam. Unusually long face-halved bladed scarf joint in SW wing
wallplate. Moulded plank doors with old iron fittings.
