Includes: No.1 SUFFOLK ROAD.
Pair of semi-detached villas, attached wall to right and area
railings. c1830-40. Stucco over brick with ashlar porch;
concealed roof; iron area railings.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 6 first-floor windows. Stucco detailing
includes first-floor band surmounted by full-height Doric
pilasters to ends, centre and outer windows, surmounted by
continuous frieze and cornice. Ground floor at right has
horizontal rustication. 6/6 sashes throughout, taller to
ground floor, all in plain reveals and with sills. Basement
has 6/6 and 8/8 sashes. Entrances in porches set in return
elevation: that to right: flight of roll-edged steps to
4-panel door with fanlight with radial glazing bars to head;
further entrance to left return: 3 steps to 4-panel door in
projecting porch with lattice frieze and fanlight with radial
glazing bars and tooled arch with keystone in pilastered
surround with entablature. Otherwise left return has 3
first-floor windows, irregularly spaced; full-height pilasters
to ends and to first floor over porch; 6/6 sash over porch,
3/3 sash at left and round-arched staircase window; blind
openings at right.
INTERIOR: noted as retaining original joinery and plasterwork
including panelled shutters to windows, panelled doors,
moulded cornices, and fireplaces.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings have scrolled lozenge
motif. Wall at right has round-arched opening and copings.
Wall abuts Nos 3 and 4 Montpellier Grove (qv).
