Terrace of 5 houses, now offices and shop with flats over,
with attached railings. c1820-1850 with later alterations
including c1980s ground-floor shop front to Nos 16 and 17,
Clarence Parade (at right). Stucco over brick with concealed
roof, brick party-wall stacks between Nos 1 and 2, and cast-
and wrought iron verandahs and railings.
PLAN: double depth with side stairhalls and full-height
service ranges to rear.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with basements, 15 first-floor windows (3
per house). Central pedimented breakforward and end
breakforwards. Stucco detailing includes ground-floor
rustication with voussoirs over openings except at right;
first- and second-floor bands; crowning frieze and cornice
with blocking course. First and second floors have 6/6 sashes
throughout, taller to first floor. 1/1 sashes to ground floor.
Basement has 3/6 and 6/6 sashes. Entrances (except to right):
flights of roll-edged steps (where original) to 5-panel doors
(3 to left, 1 to right) with side-lights and segmentally
arched fanlights with batwing-type glazing bars. To right a
glazed shop front with glazed door. Blocking course. Left
return has 4 + 1 first-floor windows, mainly blind, otherwise
6/6 sashes and 1/1 sashes with margin-lights.
INTERIOR: original joinery and plasterwork remains with
narrow-open-well staircase to Nos 16 & 17 Clarence Parade with
stick balusters and wreathed handrail; plasterwork includes
cornices with acanthus moulding. Otherwise not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: all except No.1 (at left) have
first-floor verandahs with rod-and-concentric-circle-motif and
scrolls to uprights. Fleurs-de-lys to bars of area railings
and to sides of steps, except at right. Stucco balcony to left
has pierced balustrade.
