Description

BUCKLAND MONACHORUM
SX 46 NE
3/31 Mill building approximately 15
- metres to south of Hatch Mill
Farmhouse

GV II

Mill building. Dated 1861 built by M L Lopez - lord of the manor at the time.
Granite rubble walls with gable end slate roof. Single room on each floor,
originally 3 storeys. Asymmetrical front with door to right and window to left on
ground floor, both with brick arches. Tall window to left lights first and second
floors, row of pigeon holes under eaves. Date stone to right of centre on second
floor with initials M.L.Lopez. The wheel has been removed from the left gable end
but the axle remains. Inside some of the machinery remains although the larger
pieces have been removed.
There has been a mill on this site since medieval times and although this building
is a late one it represents the continuity of the mill site and forms a group with
the older farmhouse.
