Description

UPLOWMAN
ST 01 NW
4/176 Nos I and 2 Staplegate
-
- II
2 cottages. Probably late C18 - early C19, renovated in mid C20. Plastered stone
rubble, may with cob; stone rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatch roof, slate
to C20 extensions.
Plan: pair of contemporary cottages facing south, each a mirror plan of the other.
Each has a larger room at the end with a gable-end stack and smaller unheated inner
room. Integral rear outshots and C20 service extensions to rear. No.1 is the right
(west) cottage and No. 2 is the left. 2 storeys.
Exterior: overall irregular 5-window front of C20 iron-framed casements without
glazing bars. It seems that the first floor windows of No.1 have been altered. If
there were 3 windows here the front would be symmetrical. The front doorways are
each end of the front and both contain C20 doors under contemporary thatch hoods.
Roof is gable-ended.
Interior: what little carpentry detail that is exposed is plain. Roof not
inspected.
