Description

SS 90 NW BICKLEIGH BICKLEIGH
5/21 Lovell chest tomb about 7 metres
- south of the porch of St Mary
GV II
Chest tomb. Late C17 date on lid, the chest appears to be earlier, perhaps the lid
is a replacement. Volcanic trap chest, lid of a different stone. The chest has a
plinth and moulded cornice with 3 panels on each side divided by a hollow moulding.
Each panel is carved with a patje formje cross in deep relief. The ends of the chest
have similar hollow mouldings. The oversailing lid has an inscription commemorating
John Lovell of Bickleigh and describes the Lovell charity "one part of four of y land
of Collacy to y poore of Priers Quarter in Tiverton 2 parts in Lincloth the other in
mony to y poore of this pish to be distributed yearly by y overseers of each pish".
The lettering may be a C19 copy of a late C17 text.
