Description

CHERITON FITZPAINE
SS 80 NE
7/2 East Forde Farmhouse
-
GV II

Farmhouse. Late C17-early C18, possibly earlier core. Plastered cob on rubble
footings; rubble stacks, 1 topped with C19 brick; thatched roof. Plan comprises 2
heated rooms and 2 entrance lobbies. Faces south-east. Large lateral stack
projecting from front and left (south-west) gable end stack. 2 storeys. Irregular
3-window front comprising late C19-early C20 casements, all with glazing bars. There
is a 4-panel door left of the lateral stack and a plank door at right end with a bee
bole alongside. The lateral stack has its original rubble chimney shaft. Roof is
hipped to right. Inside the right hand room fireplace is blocked but its massive
size is indicated in a cupboard. It is volcanic ashlar and includes an ash-pit on
right side. Another blocked volcanic ashlar fireplace in left room. Both rooms have
chamfered beams with runout stops. The roofspace is inaccessible but bases of
principals indicate A-frame trusses. The layout suggests the possibility of a C16 3-
room-and-through-passage house adapted to present layout in late C17-early C18.
